Question & answer
What are probiotics?
Probiotics are drugs or biologically active food supplements, which contain added live micro-organisms which are representatives of normal human microflora.
What take probiotics for?
The purpose of probiotics is to restore the disturbed balance of microorganisms that inhabit the various mucous membranes of man. That is, probiotics aims at the prevention and treatment of all kinds of dysbacteriosis and associated diseases.
Is it possible to overdose on probiotics?
In the human body, there are a large number of microorganisms. (For example, in the intestine contains up to 1012 microorganisms in 1 cm3.) Habitats of microorganisms on mucous integuments of the person and the microorganism attaches to specific receptors. The number of such receptors is limited, so the microorganisms from probiotics, take only the amount of receptors that are free. Other probiotic microorganisms are not attached to the epithelium of the intestine remain in the gut and over time eliminated from the body. Thus, when taking a probiotic may not be an overdose of the drug and its prolonged use does not cause the “replacement effect” and other negative effects.
